Free broadband by 2009??
I just read this piece of news at slashdot... The government is planning to give away free 2mbps broadband connections to all the residents of India by 2009! It'd hard to believe something like this. How many ambitious promises like these actually see the light of the day? Just another blind promise.
Its not that I don't trust the government (which I don't.. by the way), but I can't believe that all the infrastructure will be ready to provide free broadband to anyone in the country. Right now, we are not even getting 24 hours electricity supply in a city like Bangalore... don't even ask about smaller towns and villages. And connecting each town in India with broadband connections and giving it for free? I don't think so.. It will be interesting to see what infrastructure will they adopt to deliver the broadband access. My guess is that they will take advantage of the existing cable infrastructure which delivers cable TV to millions of homes in the country to give Internet access.
There was one interesting comment I read in the page which really set me thinking. One visitor said that since the government will be providing Internet access to all, they will be able to monitor all the traffic.. which means they will come to know what each person in India is surfing. Sounds scary, doesn't it?
But coming to the point, I don't think this is going to happen in the next 7-8 years or so, if its going to happen at all. Post your comments and tell me what you think.
