A Bangalore based computer science student's view of technology, recent happenings, and life in general

How long can you concentrate?

I am reading a very interesting book called The Business of Memory by Frank Felberbaum. Its not your usual book about memory and concentration, because this one is actually enjoyable and fun. It has several practical exercises which help you evaluate and improve your memory and concentration.

One of the facts I learned from this book is that people (in general) can't really concentrate on a single subject for a long time. I have heard my friends telling me that they can study 4 hours at a stretch, but out of those 4 hours, how much time is actually used in actively concentrating and studying?

Just do this short exercise: Pick something you want to concentrate on. It could be a paragraph in a book, a picture, anything. Concentrate on the task as hard as you can for about 15 minutes. Ask yourself if you are really concentrating on the subject, or if you are thinking of something else and your mind has wandered elsewhere. Now, how much time can you actually spend concentrating on something without taking a break or loosing concentration??

Post your comments and let me know how you did.. and be honest!

My god.. This blog is more than two years old. I have had 3 different blogs after this one. And I don't have enough time to write these days.

How did you even manage to find this blog? I nearly forgot about it myself!

Anyway, thanks for your effort and concern.
I would trust the judgement of the people around me rather than some random ball-less anonymous commentator on ancient three year old blog. If you have anything to say to me, give me a call.
